Why On-Page SEO is Important And How Does SEO Work?
There are two kinds of SEOs
- On-page SEO (or on-site SEO)
- Off-page SEO
On-Page SEO is an art of customizing the content of web pages for both search engines as well as for users.
Off-Page SEO is used for optimizing for signals which occur outside your website (with the help of backlinks).
So, we are clear about these two types are SEOs, and we will discuss all off-page SEO later. Now, let’s talk about On-Page SEO
What Makes On-Page SEO So important?
In 2020, there are not lot of changes in term of on-page SEO. It is still the same as before with minor updates by Google. If you have website or planning to have a website, you must pay attention or learn first before writing any content for your website.
Here is how Google’s own report “How Google Search Works“:
On-Page SEO: Google loves what users love
Although Google is smarter than before, it still utilizes the same old school stuff (such as searching for a related keyword in your website).
Google still scans your website for phrases or keywords and try to find out what is this content about. After they find some related keywords with fresh quality content they started to rank it high.
Based on 10 Million Google search results, we discovered a correlation between using of main keywords on title tags and the ranking of the first page.
The target keyword appears in the title tag (exact match).
If you look for a keyword with high competition, you may notice that nearly everybody is using exactly the same keyword phrases in their titles within the top ranked pages.
Keywords in the titles or headlines on SERP.
On-page SEO optimization is beyond just adding keywords to the HTML of your page.
In order to be ranked in 2020, you must also optimize content for:
- Best User Experience
- Improving Bounce Rate as well as Dwell Time
- Searchers Intent
- Page Speed
- CTR or Click-through-rate
Content Optimization for SEO
At this point, when you have clearly understood why “on-page SEO” really plays a role, it is now time to get started with optimizing or writing SEO friendly content.
More specifically, I will demonstrate you here on optimizing each page of your website using the keyword.
Therefore, if you think about “what is the best way to add keywords on my web page?”, you will enjoy these practical SEO tips. These are old school SEO techniques on a page which are still working perfectly well. In first 150-200 words on your post or content, you should use your main focus keyword.
Because Google adds more value to the keyword terms which come up at the beginning of your page. That really matters. Healthline website posted an article on Weight Loss Tips. If they actually did publish an article about Weight Loss Tips, there is no sense or tactful to use the term “Weight Loss Tips” at the middle or bottom of the page?
Certainly not, Because of that, you may want to put your main focus keyword in the 1st 150-200 words or so somewhere. This seems simple but more powerful and really makes Google think about the purpose of your page.
You should put your blog title in H1 tag
The H1 tag is more like a headline mini-tag.
As a matter of fact, Google said that the use of H1 tag “helps Google figure out the page structure”.
The majority of platforms ( such as WordPress ) are automated in adding the H1 tag within the header of a blog post. And if you are already using WordPress, we are on the same page.
Anything apart from WordPress, you need to check your website code to be sure that your headline is written in H1. And make sure that your main keyword is within this H1 tag.
You should wrap the subtitles in H2 tags.
Put your keyword within at least one subtitle. And place this subtitle under the H2 tag.
Does H2 tag do any harm to your SEO page?
Certainly not. And I have my own SEO studies showing me that a H2 tag including your main keyword can add value to the content and optimize it for search intent.
This is an illustration of such a strategy in action (target keyword=”content marketing tools“):
Keyword Frequency And Keyword Density
The keyword “Frequency” is exactly the same as it seems: The number of times the keyword is added to your content.
Google might deny that multiple times adding the same keyword can help. But professionals SEO experts would say that it certainly does work.
Consider it that way:
Suppose you have a website where Google thinks, talks about a certain keyword. However, this keyword only comes up one time on the page.
To what extent can they be sure the article or the post is dedicated to that focus keyword? It is hard to say that. Correct?
However, if a web page shows up with a keyword 8-10 times, and Google may be more certain about the topic of that page.
Just to clarify.
This is not about filling or stuffing a page with a keyword or something similar. It’s just mentioning the keyword a couple of times to help Google know that the post is indeed about the topic.
For instance, Brian Dean did his best in writing content for the competitive term in Google using this keyword “YouTube SEO“. Do you think how many times he used the exact term “YouTube SEO” in this article in 32,000 words?
Only 6 times. So yes, there is no need to go too far. It is fine to use keywords couple of times naturally without spamming.
As per Yoast SEO, keyword density must be between “between 0.5% and 3%”
For example: For 100 words words, if the focus or main keywords are used 3 times, then keyword density will be 3%, You can use more keywords number of times, but it must be place naturally to your content.
Use External (Outgoing) Links To Authority Websites
With external links to relevant websites, Google can help you understand the subject matter of your page and consider your content as a place for good quality information.
And this is more than just a theoretical concept. The guys from Reboot Online Marketing conducted a study to check whether external links really help in improving the ranking.
They built 10 new sites. Some of websites referred and linked to authoritative sites (for example, Oxford University). The second half did not include external links.
And websites with external links ranked well than sites without them.
Customize your URLs for SEO
The URL structure are most integral part of a SEO page.
For instance, Google recently began using strange URL versions within search results.
However, the terms you are using in your URL still come up here. In addition, URLs in mobile and desktop search queries are appearing on the top of title tags.
Therefore, the URL is really very essential now than it used to be.
This is how you make SEO compliant URLs:
- Keep your URLs as short as possible
- Add a main keyword to your URL
For instance, Moz published a post “link building“ is mainly optimized for the keyword “link building“. Therefore, they used this keyword in URL.
Well, it doesn’t necessarily mean that the URL must have only a keyword in it. It is absolutely normal to include an additional words to your URL
… or having your keyword comes after a subfolder.
Optimization Of Description And Title Tags
Let’s understand how you can find out and how to customize your SEO title as well as meta descriptions.
As Google says, title tags continue to “really help” with your search ranking.
So they are deserving to be optimized.
And that’s the same thing with your descriptions. Google might not need to read your description to figure out the content of your page, but users use it to find out where to click.
Therefore, if you are interested in creating SEO-friendly tags for headlines as well as descriptions, then this section is just for you.
Make use of title tag at the beginning
I believe that the most important thing about on-page SEO is your title tag.
As title tags provide search engines with a higher level view of exactly about your articles or posts.
The nearer a keyword at the start of a title tag, more the weight it carries in search engines.
This is an illustration from my large SEO tool lists.
You do not have to have your keyword at the very start of the title tag.It may not be meaningful at all.
However, more closer your title tag appears at front of the title tag, much better.
You should add title tag variants or modifiers.
The use of modifiers such as “best”, “guide”, “checklist”, “fast” and “review” may help you rank, as you include in your main keyword, like long tail keywords.
For instance, our SEO training guide contains “New” and “Guide” specifiers.
In this way, we may rank long tail variants of “learn SEO” like “learn SEO guide”.
In fact, you might even be much more creative than this.
For keyword research tools lists, I have included a header tag modifier “for SEO”.
For what? To have your page appear when people search for terms such as “SEO Keyword Research Tools”. And that works!
Make use of unique, keyword-rich meta descriptions.
This is what the Google Search Engine Optimization Beginning Guide says:
And most recently Google suggested that you should create your own meta-descriptions.
(Although Google can suggest them with its own parameters).
This happens because best meta descriptions can help highlight your result, which can increase your organic CTR.
This is your description template, which I prefer to follow and recommend.
You would also like to add main keyword once in the description.
Because Google supports words that correspond to a person’s request.
Again, it can provide you with a nice little CTR boost.
Create Awesome Content For Users
The moment has come to publish the content which is worthy of the first place.
It goes far beyond the use of keywords within your page.
If you want to rank your content for the year 2020, it must be the same as it needs to be:
- Awesome and unique
- High Value
- Customized for search
And here in this section I demonstrate you ways to be certain that the SEO content of yours pass through all these 3 tests
It’s a unique content.
By saying “unique”, I’m saying not only copy the content.
It is about posting stuff that is uniquely designed and written which serves which passes the information which is already not there.
In short, content that has new important information for users.
There may be something new:
- A new piece of advice or strategy
- Improved list of resources for oversight
- Robust design and UX
- A new case study
- A smooth step-by-step process
For instance, this SEO checklist article is ranked 1st in Google by the keyword “SEO checklist“.
Do you feel that it came in 1st place because they have used it multiple times?
It certainly worked. But for such a very high competitive keywords, the use of keywords is not sufficient.
It rank first because my page is unique and awesome.
Of course, it contains tips and strategies and case studies which may not able available anywhere:
But there are also many tips and examples on it, which you may see only in my article.
High Value Content
Posting something unique is a great way to start.
But that is not sufficient.
Hosting Facts says there are about 4 million daily blog posts.
So the content must be really super high valuable.
These are a few ways to turn your SEO content into incredibly valuable:
- Put more details in: Pictures, sketches and tricks help make it easier for anyone to use your stuff in practice.
- Crispy writing: Powerful copy-writing will add more fun in your content.
- Updated material: The new strategies, actions and illustrations follow playa very important role.
- Expert authors: The majority of the content is created by people who never did what they suggest.
- The contents from people with direct experience are nearly always more precious than those created by a casual freelance author.
- The most important thing which gives my post on the SEO checklist such value is the SEO checklist itself.
It begins with something suitable for a beginner. And it becomes more and more important as you work through it. You get a lot of specific details along the way:
And content written by those who breathe and live in SEO each day:
The content that meets the search. Unique, high valued content may pull the post to top of Google pages. However, if you would like to remain there, then your page must correspond to the search query.
The page must be exactly the same as Google’s search engine wants it to be something special and unique.
Otherwise, web page will most probably be hidden on page 15 or found nowhere.
This mistake everyone had to study diligently.
Customize with CTR
There are two reasons why your “CTR” is useful. First of all, “CTR” is Google’s one of ranking factor. Secondly, improving the CTR may lead to increased traffic on your website. Here in section I will demonstrate you 4 practical ways by which you can increase your own organic CTR.
You should try to make use of the Question Tags. We checked 4-7 million web pages on Google over the past year to figure out the reasons some pages appear to be clicked first than others. And among our most surprising results is that title tags based on questions rank above average CTR.
Therefore, when it matters, I suggest that you test the title tags which contain a question. For instance, nofollow link guide has a question in its title tag. The point is that anyone looking for a “nofollow link” likely just wishes to understand its meaning.
So my header tag indicates to people that it will provide them with exactly what they need.
Matter of fact, it has “27% Click through rate” for the main focus keyword “nofollow link”.
Complete the necessary meta descriptions. I mentioned meta descriptions above. In particular, I indicated that you need your meta descriptions to be very convincing. But you may not require to write awesome descriptions with 100% of the time. It’s just that having a meta description can be enough.
As a matter of fact, we discovered that pages containing meta description received about 6% more clicks than pages with no meta description.
I suggest performing a SEO test of your site to search for pages that lack meta description. Next, insert descriptions to the pages that require them.
Include a “ Review” or “Frequently Asked Questions” schema.
This does not work directly for your SEO but adding them adds extra advantage to your content.
However, with these certain kinds of schema, you can rank and earn extra perks.
“Rich Snippets” may give you extra clicks
The best 2 kinds of schemes to get rich snippets include:
You may test twice if you have configured your schema correctly with “the Structured Data Test Tool“.
You can include some emotions to your title tags. With our CTR research, we found that emotional titles click 7% more often than titles that do not have powerful emotional sentimental values.
We also found that emotionally high “Power Words” reduced the number of clicks by 12%. Give you what?
You know, people get attracted by titles that have an emotional touch with some valid point.
If the title goes beyond that, it seems to be a click bait. And they hit on a different result that seems a less spam one.
Bottom line: You have to write title tags with certain emotions. But you must not use terms like “crazy” and “strong” which can make your headline sound like click bait.
You can include the current year in the headline and description.
This is an example you must see.
Including a year to your title and description can boost your CTR, as users are always looking for most updated information. However, in my opinion, it really does work. Particularly, for articles that may quickly get out of date. For instance, anyone looking for the “Seneca philosophy” wouldn’t want what was released a month ago. However, for such a keyword as “best smartphones”, searchers need to be sure that they’re going to read something relevant.
But adding a year to the title and description shows that your post is relevant and updated.
What Are UX-Signals And How To Optimize IT
Here, I will demonstrate you ways to improve your posts or articles for “UX signals”. In short, how Google bots check your posts or articles on your website.
Dwell Time and Bounce Rate, why they are important and we should always take care of it for ranking in Google.
As a matter of fact, Google’s How Search Works publication says that in order to assist them in ranking the top results, they “use the combined and anonymous interaction data to evaluate if the search results correlate to queries”.
Let’s learn how to keep Google searchers on your web page.
Place your main points or content above your content. Whenever a user arrives at your site from Google, he wants his answer to be quick. That’s why you need to stop using big images above like shown here:
Rather, place your title and short introduction to the front where it is clearly visible to users.
To make it simple: it is normal to display an image to the top of the article. However, if it moves your content below the page, that is not okay. As users come to see their search results not your images.
Chunk Your Content
No one has time to read all content on your page. And it is not written well and optimized to the point, they are most likely to press back button and search for another content.
This is why you want to create your content ultra easy to read and more actionable.
That’s what I used as many as possible in my website
- Using more of H2 subtitles whenever possible.
- The H2 tag is in the article.
- Bullets Points
- The bullet lists in the post
- And the images
- Pictures in the post
- Having most interactive community or comment section.
- Having a blog community can improve your bounce rate
Why is that?
High quality comments section leaves great impression both to readers and Google, because users love to read and comment if they like something on your post. Because comments put context into your article:
Encourage new ways and strategies:
And at times, add a little disagreement to things:
Extra Points in comment
All the stuff which keeps people extra attached to your page
Create A Blog Comment Section
Creating a blog comment section is a good where your readers will come and leave a comment to your article and you must reply to each comment with a solution.
Tips For On-Page SEO Optimization
It is time now to show some tips and tricks for on-page SEO.
We will discuss best SEO techniques for the page. Now that you have improved your page title and H1 tags, these are some tips to boost your SEO page to a new level.
Let’s jump into it.
Create and share the original images. Do you include images from the stock in your posts? Well, these images can harm your SEO. Shai Aharoni has recently tried out the use of images from the stock in a Google ranking.
That’s what happened.
First of all, Shai built a couple of brand-new sites for these experiments. They were fresh domains names which were previously never registered.
Shay’s brand new domains
He made use of general stock images on certain sites and the unique pictures on the other sites.
An image in stock or a unique image which one worked?
It was clear that websites with unique images outperformed those adding stock copyrighted pictures.
Duplicate pictures against unique original pictures.
Therefore, if you have stock photos which use thousands of other sites, consider designing fast loading images optimized for Google.
Here, is the best example. And according to at least this little research, these original images are likely to contribute to our ranking.
Internal link – Huge scope for SEO. In particular, you should link your posts or pages from high authority website to get a boost on your ranking. Make use of keyword rich anchor text whenever possible.
Wikipedia is best examples of internal links on your website, it dominates Google for any term, as it includes lots keyword rich internal links to content.
Write Long Detail Content Of The Subject
Google needs to show visitors the content that provides them everything they need on one page.In other words: full content length content with all details
If your content serves all that is needed, changes are high to get into the rankings.
And LSI keywords come into picture for this matter. LSI keywords represent all the synonyms Google needs to identify the relevance of a page.
LSI keywords really helpful, and one must include in their content for better quality and increase relevancy of the page, and use similar words into your content multiple times, which appear on Google below search results as a related words.
Speed Up Your Page Speed
Page Load Speed is another example of ranking single, think this way, if your web page takes lots of time to load, who would like to stay for that long. Searchers would immediately press back button and look for another content, and this give -ve signal to Google.
And then, it shows up pages which load very fast compare to pages which loads slow.
Using high quality images are good but we cannot never compromise to page speed, so we must remove high size images, and unused third party plugins as much as possible.
Optimize Your Image
You can use this formula for optimizing image names
Image name (use keyword rich)+Alt text (describe what image is all about)
This is both good for users and Google so they can understand even if the image does not load due to low internet connection.
Optimizing your images play a very important role, as it sends clear message to Google what this page is all about.
Ranking articles on “Google Featured Snippets”
This can really make a difference and improve your CTR.
But, to appear in rich snippets, you need to have good authority website and already ranking for that keyword or word phrases.
Featured Snippet in SERP
Finally, you must optimize your article to be ranked to 1st page of Google.
Voice search has been very popular these days. And the perfect way to improve content for voice search?
Make FAQ pages
In our SEO Voice Search research, we discovered that Google wants to extract voice search results directly through FAQ pages and results that are FAQ pages.
Crawling And Indexing
- Check webpage crawlable
- Check wepage indexable
There is no ranking if Google spiders are unable to read your webpage. Your site “robots.txt” file and NoIndex tags represent two most common factors that you should be aware of.
It is an excellent tool to ensure that your page is crawled. You can just enter a specific URL and hit the “Submit” button.
This tool shows you all those things that either block or not blocked the search engine spiders. You will see the status code “200” to make sure all worked fine.
